今回はメキシコ出身で御宿に移住したアドリアンさんをご紹介いたします！ 御宿での生活の参考にして頂くべく、御宿に関わる多様な『人』をご紹介していきます。 （ English follows Japanese. ）
メキシコと歴史的に交流が深い御宿町に、メキシコ出身のアラゴン・ラミレス・アドリアンさんが移住して、2024年9月で1年が経過した。
アドリアンさんは、メキシコ国立農放牧研究所（ INIFAP: Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Forestales Agrícolas y Pecuarias）に長年勤務し、在職中にはイギリスや日本への留学を経験した。
2013年に勤務していたINIFAPを早期退職し、2015年から日本での暮らしを始めた。来日後は、鴨川や熱海で、古民家の改修、ビニールハウスの設計、農業機械の修理など様々な仕事に従事する一方、自身でメキシコ野菜の栽培なども行なっていた。
そんなおり、2023年に御宿町の移住体験ツアーに参加し、担当者の茂木智仁さんに出会った。 アドリアンさんは、「のどかで、美しい日本の田舎に移住したい。そして古民家で自給自足の生活をしながら、古代メキシコの農法で野菜を栽培したい。」と考えていた。 また
御宿の気候、自然、メキシコとの友好関係にも惹かれました
とアドリアンさんは話す。 ところが御宿町内で希望の物件がなかなか見つからず、隣町に仮住まいしながら家探しを行うこととなった。
約２ヶ月後ようやく希望の物件を見つけることができた。アドリアンさんは、「茂木さんをはじめ、サポートして頂いた関係者に深く感謝したい。レストハウスを提供してくれた人、仮住まいの家を提供してくれた人、古民家の情報を提供してくれた人など、多くの方々のサポートがあり、移住することができた。」と話す。
御宿に移住後は、敷地内の小規模な畑で、古代メキシコの農業システムであるミルパ（Milpa）という手法での野菜作りを実験的に開始した。
「 ミルパという手法は、同じ農期に同じ区画で、複数の作物を栽培し、作物の組み合わせと輪作により、土壌の健康と肥沃さを維持する農業システムです。 土の豊かさを維持するため化学肥料・農薬は使用せず、堆肥、モミガラ、ヌカなどを活用し、土地柄に合わせた方法を適用していきたい。」とアドリアンさんは語る。
近所に友人もできた。 また2024年5月5日に御宿で開催されたメキシコの文化を楽しむ祭り「Cinco de Mayo（シンコデマヨ）」では、メキシコ式のくす玉割り「ピニャータ」を開催し、地域交流を深めた。今後の活動について、アドリアンさんは次のように語った。
これからも御宿町とメキシコの友好関係を深めることに貢献したい
Mr. Adrian Aragon Ramirez, originally from Mexico, marked one year since his relocation to Onjuku Town on 2023 September. Known for its strong historical connections with Mexico, Onjuku has become Adrian’s new home.
For many years, Mr. Adrian worked at Mexico’s National Institute for Forestry, Agriculture, and Livestock Research ( INIFAP: Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Forestales, Agrícolas y Pecuarias). During his career, he also had the opportunity to study abroad in both the United Kingdom and Japan.
In 2013, he took early retirement from INIFAP, and since 2015, he has been living in Japan. After moving to Japan, Adrian engaged in various work, including renovating KOMINKA ( traditional Japanese houses), designing greenhouses, and repairing agricultural machinery in places like Kamogawa and Atami. At the same time, he also began cultivating Mexican vegetables.
In 2023, Mr. Adrian participated in Onjuku relocation experience tour, where he met Mr. Moteki, as a coordinator. Mr.Adrian said, “I wanted to move to a quiet and beautiful Japanese countryside. My dream was to live a self-sustained life in a traditional house, growing vegetables using ancient Mexican farming methods.” He also expressed
I was also attracted Onjuku’s weather, beautiful nature, and its friendly relationship with Mexico.
However, it took time to find his ideal property in Onjuku. While temporarily residing in a neighboring town, he continued his search for the perfect home.
About two months later, he finally found the property he had been hoping for. Mr. Adrian expressed his deep gratitude, saying, “I am extremely thankful to Mr. Moteki and everyone who supported me. Thanks to the many people who provided assistance—those who offered a rest house, those who provided temporary housing, and those who shared information about traditional Japanese homes—I was able to make this move a reality.”
After settling in Onjuku, Mr. Adrian began an experimental vegetable garden on a small plot within his property, using the ancient Mexican agricultural system known as Milpa.
He explained “This is an ancient Mexican sustainable farming system which consists of cultivating several crops in the same plot during the same farming season. The combination and rotation of such crops maintain the soil health and fertility. To preserve the richness of the soil, I avoid using chemical fertilizers and pesticides. For this purpose I will apply available resources such as compost, momigara, nuka, etc. “.
He has also made friends in the local community.
On May 5, 2024, Mr. Adrian furthered cultural exchange by organizing a Mexican-style piñata activity during the “Cinco de Mayo” festival held in Onjuku, where residents celebrated Mexican culture.
